HISTORY OF ROSEVILLE

The Roseville Pottery Company was humbly established in 1892 by George F. Young, previously a school teacher and Sewing Machine Salesman for Singer Sewing Machines. The history of Roseville is confusing and it is unclear weather Roseville took it's first steps in Roseville, Ohio or in Zanesville where it established itself when George F. Young purchased a previous JB Owens factory as a form of expansion. What is clear is that the earth in Zanesville, Ohio was ultimately what the company built itself on, literally. Much of the success was due to the area's abundant clay sediment which would be used to sculpt and mold the pottery we recognize as Roseville. The first identifiable patterns were not created until the 1900s and the original name for Roseville, was actually “Rozane” or Rozaneware” this name was used until the 1920s when the construction of pottery switched to molded patterns. The most prosperous time for Roseville was in the 1940s when the Arts and Crafts Movement was at it's height here in America. Unfortunately, the factory closed in 1954, and the Roseville Pottery Company ceased to exist.
